2nd prize in Local Darts KO £30 Million!

A local village club, where I have had darts matches for more years than I care to remember, recently ran a darts knock out. They have run many annual competitions in the past with a good turnout. Advertising has always been done on the club’s notice board and by word of mouth, but this year it was actually advertised on their website as well. First prize was “Winner takes all,” and expected to be a reasonable sum. Other, odd, donated prizes were on offer for 180’s etc. Admittedly, the Club’s darts team normally play 301, double in and out, and this was to be 501 double in and out and had a £3 entry fee, but the turnout of only 8 people was still rather unexpectedly low to say the least!

2 players ended up taking all the prizes between them that included a bottle of wine each for; - a 160 start, 136 finish and there had to be a play off between them for 180’s as both players hit one each. This was pretty good going with only 7 players in the whole competition and consequently not many games to play each, although they both conceded that the standard of the games had been pretty high. The standard was certainly worthy of the £24 first prize.

2nd prize turned out to be 5 lottery tickets in the week when there was a “Rollover,” with £30 Million up for grabs. At the darts match that week my mate, who had been run into second place, said to Sam, “You got £24, but if I win the Lottery with one of my tickets I will get £30 million for coming second! Bet you will wish you had let me win the darts competition then!”

Incidentally, he didn’t win the Lottery!

Another local club, that is part of a big chain, ran one of their monthly competitions in a nearby town where darts has a tremendous following and only 6 players turned up. With a £100 guaranteed first prize, the club decided to cancel the competition that month. I know a lot of leagues are struggling to continue at the moment with the many pub closures and money being so tight for a lot of people, but it is pretty bad when clubs are trying to give decent sized money prizes away for darts and nobody wants to win it!
