An Over Confident Player. Players
often seem to have a run of excellence in an evening that is sometimes mixed in
with a little bit of luck. This can lead to over confidence and bragging about
how good they are “Tonight.” A few days ago one of my more cynical darts
playing friends who can also have a rather dry sense of humour sometimes, was on
his travels and met a confident player in the course of an evenings drinking.
The player had been on the dartboard all night when my friend walked in and gave
him a couple of games. Now even at his worst John is a fair player and can play
very well for a pub player when the mood takes him. One thing that fires up his
playing is coming up against an over confident player. He just loves to knock
the wind out of their sails. That
evening he was playing well and proceeded to beat his opposition into the
ground. After a few games, the now humbled, confident player decided it was time
to get some of his self esteem back and John, ever generous, offered to give him
a chance to win a few games. John
said, “I’ll let you double every score that you hit when you mark it up on
the board, but I think I’ll still beat you.” At
this the confident player chortled his reply, “You might be good , but
you’ve got no chance of beating me again like that. I’ll slaughter you.” John
quietly smiled back, “Don’t forget the game is 301. How are you ever going
to finish the game even if you get down to a shot out first? You will need an
odd number somewhere to leave a double and if you double all your scores on the
way down you’ll never knock the odd one off” “Smart
arse.” Was the over confident player’s response and he walked off in a huff.
