League Meeting For New Season 23/9/09

The Castle “A” team won the first season of the new league and Graham showed those attending a rather splendid looking trophy that he has bought and had engraved at a bargain price of £60 all in. As Graham pointed out this left a balance of £100 in the kitty to start the second season with if we didn’t have a knock out this time. Those present agreed that this would be better.

After much discussion it was decided the next season should be finished before the end of May 2010 to leave a Summer break. With more teams expected to join the league Graham said that we should start around the beginning of November to allow for Christmas and any knock outs, etc. Graham volunteered to write a letter and take it round all the pubs in the area to inform them of the proposals as many had not yet found the web-site.

From the start of the meeting all agreed that the league should be kept light hearted and efforts made to prevent it from becoming just another darts league. Mounty, from the Pear Tree, said that although the Pear Tree is well known for having a superb darts team on a Monday, they had a lot of players that just enjoyed the fun of darts on a Wednesday and he in particular enjoyed the evenings. He continued, everybody wanted to win, and when a game was being played order should be given, but big prize money would encourage the wrong element and we should just give out trophies of some sort. Another Tree player stated that the best players would win the trophies anyway and Graham countered by suggesting things like a Handicap Cup that would even out the differences between teams giving the lower ranking teams more chance to win. Everybody present also liked the idea of an end of season charity Knock Out with the prize fund donated to charity. A small entrance fee and a raffle helped with a bottle donated from each team would help to swell the coffers. I suggested playing on upside down Irish boards to make it more fun as was done in a Monday charity KO back on 25/8/08 LINK. I said it would confuse the better players, on their finishes, who are used to the position of the numbers. One player said never mind the players it would confuse some of the markers who can hardly mark the board anyway.

Graham said that other trophies might include a Wooden spoon type of prize for the most sporting team. He then showed us a 15 inch high porcelain toilet that could be presented to the worst player of the season. He said that he could get 6 small ones so that one could be present at each match to be awarded temporarily to the worst player of the match each week to be decided by the captains. Winning player’s names could also go on the web-site each week for all the world to see their achievements. When asked where he got the 15 inch high toilet from he told us that it came from Scobies house!

Going back to more serious league matters I brought up the thorny question of keeping averages and it was agreed that they should be optional. If a team wants to keep them, they will be recorded on the web-site, if details are given to Graham and I would alter the spreadsheet formulas to accommodate this. If a team is playing away and they want their averages for the night they will have to keep the match records if the home team doesn’t. In future they might be dropped altogether if the idea doesn’t prove popular.

It was then decided that we would try to arrange the proposed new season to fit in with the Lady darters of Rugeley who have just started their winter season. Some pubs such as the Castle, Lion and P.T.C. have 2 boards or easels, but it would be better if the fixtures could be arranged so they are home/away with the ladies as far as possible. This would mean that the pubs would always have a team in the pub on match nights. To this end Graham will give me a copy of the Winter Ladies fixtures for this year before the draw is made for our new season. It was pointed out that some teams do not have a ladies team in the Rugeley league anyway, such as my home pub, the Greyhound, who play on a Thursday in the Weston and Trent Valley League.
