The Pear Tree Green Army

Our last match before Christmas was against the Pear Tree lads with whom we had a very memorable night on our very first league game last Summer when the league first started. (See Link) This time they were prepared for us. As we arrived, we were confronted by a sea of bright green darts shirts all bearing the words, “Monty’s Darting Army.” I quickly counted up at least a dozen green shirts and asked what was going on. Bearing in mind that only 4 players are needed for a team I was totally blown away when informed that some of the players hadn’t turned up and they had 16 signed players!

As me and my mate sat down and got our darts out ready for a practice I had a little chat to a couple of their lads. One of them bore the name “Bogis” on his shirt. This was a moniker that I remembered as belonging to one of the local darting “Names” from my early darting days in Rugeley some 30 odd years ago. As he wasn’t old enough to be the same man I was a little puzzled, but his face was as I remembered it. It seemed he was the son of the “Bogis” I recalled and the old feller had passed away in his eighties some time before, but out of respect the son had adopted his nickname, so that it lived on. After passing on my condolences the chat returned to “Monty’s Green Darting Army.”

I must point out that that they are not the “Green Army” from the Vaults on a Monday night. This lot are so called, because they wear green shirts and were set up as a fundraising team  to help a local charitable good cause by staging various events where they could raise a lot of money and have a good time while doing it. So far they have raised some £1,600 that has been used to send a 9 year old disabled boy and his carer on the skiing holiday of a lifetime. They have enjoyed their success so much that they are looking forwards to running more events for more good causes.

Some of the Rugeley darters may have a bit of a reputation, but this is by no means the first time that major fund raising has been done by them. It wasn't so long ago that a big charity Knock Out was held at Libbys, in the Monday League, in a joined effort with the girls from the local Ladbrokes. See Old Article.
